Contact State Representatives to Save Federal Funding

Contact Congress by April 3rd to save federal funding to your Hudson Public Library.

Hello all,

As you know, President Trump released his budget on March 16th. This budget eliminates funding for the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) which provides funding for libraries in every state. IMLS funds the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). In Iowa, the State Library is awarded approximately $1.8 million every year through LSTA. This money helps support our Summer Reading Program, our statewide inter-library loan program, our statewide database subscriptions (EBSCO and Learning Express), hosting statewide library websites, and training librarians and library staff.  To put into perspective, the State Library’s overall budget is $2.7 million, of which $2.5 million is passed on to Iowa libraries through services and direct aid. A cut of $1.8 million would noticeably affect services the State Library could provide.

How do these programs impact Hudson? Last year, 122 kids participated in Summer Library Program, Inter-library Loan provided patrons with 292 items, and over 2,000 articles were retrieved from EBSCO which is used heavily as Hudson students prepare for National History Day and Learning Express which provides on-line computer training. So far in 2017 there have been 1,679 visits to our webpage which is hosted by the State Library. Without the State Library’s assistance (and funding from IMLS) most of these programs would either be eliminated or the cost would have to be covered by other funding such as city or state.

Here is a simple thing you can do to help ensure that federal funding for libraries stays intact and by extension that your library services stay the same.  Contact your members of Congress via phone or email. The deadline for action is April 3rd.

If you don’t want to see your library services change in the upcoming year, I urge you to contact congress and let them know that libraries and the services they provide are important to you and should be funded.

Sincerely,
